HOW SCHOOL BOARD POLICIES ARE ADOPTED
There are several circumstances under which School Board policies are adopted or revised, including:
-
new state or federal laws require that specific policies be adopted
-
the local school district identifies a topic for which a policy is needed that is not mandated by law
-
the local school district undergoes
a systematic review of all policies, to ensure that policy
language is consistent with current circumstances and practices.
Board policies are adopted by a formal process that includes three key steps:
- A policy (or group of
policies) is identified to be reviewed for warning, which is done at a
Board meeting. In most instances, the Board uses model policies
provided by the Vt. School Boards Association or the Vt. Department of
Education, modifying to fit local circumstances.
-
Once policy language is agreed
upon, the Board formally "warns" the policy for adoption at a Board
meeting at least 20 days ahead -- the warning is posted in local
papers, at the school and Superintendent's Office, in the school's
newsletter and on the school's website, and on regular Board meeting
agendas, and the complete policy language is available upon request.
-
The policy is discussed (with public input, if any) and formally adopted at a Board meeting.
